SES Frequently Asked Questions

What is Supplemental Educational Services (SES)?

Tutoring services provided by outside agencies at no cost to parents.

What is the tutoring for?

To provide additional academic support to low income students who are at-risk of not meeting state standards.

Who is eligible?

Low-Income students.  Students who QUALIFY for free or reduced lunch are considered low-Income.  If your child does not eat at school, he/she should still complete the free/reduced lunch application to determine eligibility.

What if my child has an IEP or 504 plan?

SES services are Title I services and not an IEP service and should not be included in the IEP.  However, providers are expected to create service agreements for every child, with the parent, that aligns with the students school program (IEP/504 plan) and state and district content standards.

Why is the district offering this?

Schools that are in Program Improvement Year 2+ must provide additional opportunities for students to be academically successful.

Who gets to choose which provider is helping my child?

Parents choose who provides services to their child from a list of providers approved by the state.

What providers may I choose from?

All providers must be approved by the State Board of Education prior to serving students.  The state approved providers that have agreed to serve county schools is available in the school office and on the county website at www.sbcss.k12.ca.us

There are so many providers, how can I choose just one?

You have the right to contact the providers and ask them questions about their programs.  A Helpful Tips for Parents  guide is available that will provide questions that you may want to ask providers.  Various districts have also put together reports that show the success rate of different providers.  You may call the categorical program coordinator for these reports.

What can I expect from the providers?

You are the client.  Providers may approach you regarding their services.  They have this right, but you also have the right to say “No, thank you.”  Providers should NOT ask you for any money associated with their services.

How many hours of tutoring will my child receive?

Your child will receive services up to the cost of $1,358.79 or the amount required by the state per student for the 09-10 school year.   Typically students will receive between 16-30 hours of services depending on the cost of the provider chosen.

When are services provided?

Tutoring occurs outside of the regular school day.  It may be any day of the week convenient for the student and provider, including weekends.

Where are services provided?

Services may be provided at the providers center, in the students home, at a local community center, library, school site, or on-line.  Parents determine this with the provider chosen.

How much will it cost me?

FREE to parents/students up to the per student allotment.

How will I know if the tutoring is helping my child?

Tutors are to provide parents and school staff with ongoing progress reports that show student progress.

If I have a problem with a tutor, what do I do?

Although the providers set up services directly with you, we will be here to help you.  Please call our office if you need any assistance.
