Community Helpers : Cooking Ideas

Cereal From The Grocery Store

Ingredients
small individual boxes of cereal
milk
bananas

Supplies
Paper Bowls
Heavy Duty Plastic Spoons
Measuring Cup

This simple cooking activity allows the children to practice their fine motor skills by opening small cereal boxes. They then have to pour the cereal into the bowls with the milk. We measured 1/2 cup of milk each. Some of our children are just beginning to spoon feed, so this activity was a great challenge for all. The children sliced bananas into five slices and counted them into the bowls. Along with this activity we read the book, Tommy at the Grocery Store (see Literature page). We also sang, Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed and What Did You Buy At The Grocery Store? (see Music page) A play grocery store was set up in our free play area as extensions for this activity see
Toys and Materials page.

Fire Truck Cookies

Ingredients
Recipe makes enough for twenty children
2 Boxes Graham Crackers
Black licorice
One Package Oreos
2 tubes red squeeze icing

Supplies
paper napkins

The children assembled their cookie trucks, see photo below. The squeezing of the icing was excellent for fine motor strength and the assembling of the cookies from an adult model provides a great visual perceptual activity.

Bob's Apple Snack

Ingredients

1/2 apple
1/2 yellow sliced cheese
black licorice or raisins for eyes
red licorice for mouth

Supplies
paper plates

In 2003 we had a large group of boys in our class that enjoyed " Bob the Builder ". Taking advantage of this interest, we designed a Community Helper Unit around construction workers. The highlight of the unit was a class trip to our local Home Depot where the kids participated in a Kids Workshop. The children cooked up their own construction worker above. See Art and Language for more ideas with this unit.
