Community Helpers : Bulletin Boards

Clean Hands Are Healthy Hands - This bulletin board tied into our discussion of the health workers and what we can do to stay healthy.

Children chose the community helper that they wanted to be. Digital prints and a poem about community helpers made this a hit with children and adults. (Children always love to see their pictures.)

The posters seen above featured small mirrors on each face. The children enjoyed seeing their images on each community helper poster. These posters were purchased through The Re-Print Corporation. (Sorry these are no longer available.)

For the bulletin board above we found a nice pattern of a fire dog. The children colored the hat and applied black dots with their thumb. (We also applied black dots to the board trim.) The "talking bubbles" explain the fire safety rules that the children were working on in the class.

In 2004 our Community Helper trip was to our local supermarket. We had several children in our classroom that were either mildly autistic or just plain new to school. These children needed to be well prepared ahead of time about the sequence of our trip in order to avoid behavior problems. On the board above we placed a picture of our school, then a road with a bus and at the end was a picture of the store. Each day we explained the sequence of arriving at school, getting back on the bus, traveling to the store and coming back to school. We also (not shown) made a notebook with photos of each department in the store such as the bakery, the butcher and the produce department to help explain to the children more about the store. They also made their own mini books to take home. The more the children know ahead of time and the better prepared the children are, the more they will get out of the trip. It will also lower chances of behavior problems.
