SBCSS After School Programs Office

The After School Program Team is comprised of the following staff members:

Susan Capps, Office Specialist II

Melva Jefferson , Support Staff


RIMS Region 10 Program who's Lead Office is housed out of the SBCSS provides Technical Assistance and support to all After School Programs in the Reverside, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino geographical area of Region 10.


What We Do:
The key purpose of the After School Programs Office is to provide technical assistance and support to before and after school programs. The After School Program team is responsible for:

  • Support to grantees through communication, staff development, technical assistance
  • Provide in-depth training to program staff
  • Provide information on grant compliance
  • Measure and monitor program accountability
  • Conduct regular visits and reviews of After School Programs
  • Serve as liaison between CDE and Districts and Schools

After School Program Goals:

  • To provide a safe environment in which students can be offered extended learning opportunities in an after school setting
  • To assist students in achieving academic success through extended learning opportunities
  • Provide educational, enrichment, innovative, study skills and success in academic (primary reading and math, science, social science)
  • Provide enriching and innovative opportunities including arts, recreation, entrepreneurial ventures, and technology
  • Build mentor capacity in students and the community
  • Provide positive, structured, adult supervision
  • Teach children ways of resolving conflicts
  • Provide tutoring and homework assistance
  • Provide opportunities to learn new skills
  • Develop school to career opportunities

After School Programs seek to improve the educational success of students through extended learning opportunities.

To achieve this goal, After School Programs:

  • Serve students through academic assistance (homework clubs, cross-age tutoring, enrichment classes, etc.)
  • Integrate academic and technology enrichment in literacy, arts, math, and science activities
  • Work with students to complete student-selected community service activities culminating in presentations (plays, multi-media productions, exhibits) demonstrating learning to other students, parents, and the community
  • Host events for students, parents and community members where students present products or demonstrate skills relating to their after-school programs.
