Redlands East Valley, Redlands In County Mock Trial Finals

2012-12-07

SAN BERNARDINO - Defending San Bernardino County Mock Trial champion Redlands High School will take on its district rival, Redlands East Valley, in the finals of this year's 31st annual competition.

The two Redlands Unified School District teams have combined to win each of the past eight county championships. They will be in the finals on Dec. 8, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Foothill Law and Justice Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Redlands, which has won a record 11 county Mock Trial titles, won its semifinal round match on Dec. 6 against the Academy for Academic Excellence, a charter school from Apple Valley that made last year's county finals. Redlands, which is coached by Donna St. George, will be appearing in its 16th final in the past 17 years.

Redland East Valley - which has won five county titles with coach Ed Berman, including back-to-back titles in 2009-10 - won its semifinal against Cajon High School, which was in the finals when REV won its last title in 2010.

For the finals, there will be sessions in the morning and the afternoon with both schools playing the roles of defense and prosecution.

Approximately 500 students representing 29 high schools have participated in the Mock Trial competition this year. This event is co-sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office.

The Mock Trial competition is a simulation of a criminal court case where high school students portray the principal courtroom characters on both sides of a case before a judge.

The public is invited to attend the competition, but there is limited seating. The winner of the county competition will advance to the state finals on March 22-24 in Riverside.
