Homeless Education Program Receives $80,000 From San Manuel Casino Event

2012-05-24

SAN BERNARDINO - The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools' Children Deserve Success Homeless Education Program received $80,000 from a fundraising golf tournament hosted by the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino on May 21.

"We are so appreciative of the generous support of the San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians," said Brenda Dowdy, Homeless Education specialist for County Schools. "This funding will make a big impact on providing supplies and support to our homeless students countywide."

There are more than 27,000 homeless students attending public schools among the 33 school districts in the county, according to data reported to the California Department of Education.

The fundraising money will be used to purchase backpacks, school supplies, hygiene products, emergency food and clothing, as well as meet other educational needs for homeless students for all 33 school districts.
