AVID Write-Off Ceremony Regional Winners To Be Recognized

SAN BERNARDINO - Seven regional award winners from Riverside and San Bernardino Counties will be honored at the 13th annual Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Write-Off Ceremony on April 17 at the University of Redlands Chapel.

Students in grades 6-12 from AVID programs in Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino (RIMS) counties participated in this year's competition, a timed-essay writing contest that is modeled after the University of California's Analytical Writing Exam. Each of the 132 middle and high school sites submitted one entry per grade level (617 total entries).

The following students will be recognized as regional winners:

12th-grade: Julie Tran of Pacific High School in San Bernardino;

11th-grade: Brooke Gemina of Moreno Valley High School in Moreno Valley;

10th-grade: Paul Calaoagan of Murrieta Mesa High School in Murrieta;

9th-grade: Erin Wiens of Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta;

8th-grade: Danielle Recio of Ruth Harris Middle School in Colton;

7th-grade: Hannah Neckar of Canyon Lake Middle School in Lake Elsinore.

The featured speaker at the Write-Off ceremony will be AVID teacher, Ann Camacho, author of the newly published collection of student essays, "Bookmarked" (2012).
