State Funded Preschool Program Opening in Lucerne Valley

2005-06-28

LUCERNE VALLEY – Low-income families who cannot afford to send their children to preschool may be able to do so for free through a state-funded preschool program operated by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS).

The preschool, a comprehensive child development program opening in August, will hold its classes three hours per weekday at Lucerne Valley Elementary School. For registration information, call the SBCSS State Preschool program at (909) 433-4618.

First priority for admission will be given to children, who will be four years old by Dec. 2, 2005 and reside in the Lucerne Valley Unified School District. Second priority will be given to those who will be four by Dec. 2, 2006. In either case, families with the lowest per capita income will be admitted first.

Eligibility based on income will be determined on a sliding scale. A family of three with a monthly gross income of $2,925 or less would meet the eligibility requirements, as would a family of six with a gross income of $4,290. Those enrolling their children do not have to be employed.

The preschool will have maximum class sizes of 24 students. There will be a morning and afternoon class with lunch provided in both sessions.

“The goal of our program is to promote the intellectual, social and physical growth and development of pre-kindergarten age children,” said Becky Thams, SBCSS manager.

Parents with children attending the preschool will be encouraged to volunteer in the classroom.
