AVID Seniors, Scholarship Winners To Be Honored On May 12

SAN BERNARDINO - A record 1,323 Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) seniors, who are graduating and have been accepted to a four-year college or university will be honored on May 12 at a recognition ceremony at the California State University, San Bernardino.

They are among a record 3,697 AVID seniors in the Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino (RIMS) region, who are graduating from high school this year. The San Bernardino County seniors represent 31 high schools.

Among the students to be honored from the four-county region will be 20 San Bernardino County seniors who will receive scholarships from RIMS AVID; California State University, San Bernardino; University of California, Riverside; the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation; and the Gates Millennium Foundation.

AVID is an international education program that began in San Diego and targets students in the academic middle who have a willingness to work toward college acceptance. Typically, AVID students are the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families.

RIMS AVID is one of 11 regional programs set up in California. This year's graduating seniors from the region reached the following goals:

  • Some 89 percent (3,290) have been accepted to at least one four-year university;
  • There's 31 percent that have been accepted at least to one UC school (1,146 seniors);
  • Another 76 percent have been accepted to one Cal State University (2,809 seniors).

The following county students earned scholarships from RIMS AVID: Tolulope Babalola, Kaiser; Alyssa Bright, Colton; Luaren Harter, Cajon; Julio Luna, Kaiser; Alejandra Ramirez, Chaffey; and Jose Ubeda, Rialto.

The following county students earned a scholarship from Cal State San Bernardino: Abigail Corrujedo, Middle College, and Breanna Montague, Carter.

The following county student earned a scholarship from UCR: Gloria Vallarta, Cajon.

The following students will be honored as Dell Scholars: Jocelyn Garcia, San Gorgonio; Lauren Harter, Cajon; Socheat Khun, San Gorgonio; Cindy Mahoney, Cajon; Brenda Morales, Pacific; Andrea Moreno, Middle College; Jennifer Reyes, San Gorgonio; Eduardo Romero Maciel, Pacific; and Gerardo Yanez, Pacific.

The following county students earned scholarships from the Gates Millennium Foundation: Julio Luna, Kaiser, and Tula Strong, Bloomington.
