International Studies Student Town Meeting on Jan. 12

2005-01-11

SAN BERNARDINO – Approximately 730 students representing 15 Inland Empire high schools and a middle school will be represented at the 17th annual Inland Empire Consortium for International Studies on Jan. 12 at Riverside Community College.

This year’s theme is “Nation Building in the Middle East: Internal Forces and External Pressures.” Panelists, including a representative from the U.S. State Department, will address groups of students on subjects like United States-Saudi relations, engagement or sanctions with Iran, peace in the Middle East and security in the region. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Landis Auditorium.

Students will get a chance to ask questions to the panelists. “This event is driven by the participation of the students from our schools,” said Janice Hamner, director of the consortium.

In addition, an Inland Empire teacher will be presented with the William S. Jones Memorial Award for excellence in international education at event.

The consortium is one of 13 regional sites of the California International Studies Project. The program offers educational programs for teachers, students and parents. The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools is one of the co-sponsors for the program, along with the World Affairs Council of Inland Southern California. For more information concerning the student town meeting, contact Hamner at the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools at (909) 386-2674.
