2011-03-30

SAN BERNARDINO - Fourteen San Bernardino County schools were named 2010-11 Title I Academic Achievement Award recipients today, according to Tom Torlakson state superintendent of Public Instruction.

Five county school districts had multiple schools earn the recognition. Those districts are Barstow, Ontario-Montclair, Redlands, San Bernardino City and Victor Elementary.

Among individual schools, Richardson Prep in the San Bernardino City Unified is being recognized for the seventh consecutive year. Sixth Street Prep in the Victor Elementary School District has achieved the state recognition for six consecutive years. The 14 county schools and their districts receiving Title I Academic Achievement this year are:

  • Sycamore Rocks Elementary, Apple Valley Unified;
  • Hinkley Elementary/Middle and Skyline North Elementary, Barstow Unified;
  • Oleander Elementary, Fontana Unified;
  • Cypress School of the Arts, Hesperia Unified;
  • Buena Vista Arts and Elderberry Elementary, Ontario-Montclair;
  • Franklin Elementary and Judson and Brown Elementary, Redlands Unified;
  • Palm Avenue Elementary and Richardson Prep High Middle, San Bernardino City Unified;
  • Sixth Street Prep and Village Elementary, Victor Elementary School District;
  • University Prep, Victor Valley Union High.

"We are proud of the achievements of these outstanding schools and their communities who support them," County Superintendent Gary Thomas said. "These distinctions show the high level of academic work by the students working with staff, teachers, administrators and district leadership for this statewide recognition."

Statewide, there were 209 schools who received the recognition out of nearly 6,000 Title I schools in California. Title I is one of the programs under the federal No Child Left Behind Act designed to improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged students.
