Auto Club Speedway Math/Science Day Scheduled For March 25

2011-03-18

SAN BERNARDINO - Nearly 500 middle school students from San Bernardino County are expected to attend the second Auto Club Speedway Mathematics and Science Day on March 25.

Students, representing more than a dozen schools and eight county school districts, will get to meet with Speed TV personality Rutledge Wood, as well as hear a presentation by either a National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) crew chief or driver.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities for students will include math and science labs on mass/velocity, friction/speed, friction/distance and force/height.

"When the first event was held back in October, it was obvious how much the students enjoyed the real-world applications to what they were learning in the classroom," County Superintendent Gary Thomas said. "The event on March 25 should be just as exciting."

The event is led by the Auto Club Speedway, County Schools' Alliance for Education and County Schools' Standards-Based Curriculum and Instruction Department. This event was organized in collaboration with the following educational partners: Ontario-Montclair School District; and The ALPHA Center at the University of California, Riverside.

For more information about the event, contact Kim Terry of the Alliance for Education at (909) 386-2636.
