3 County Teams Place In Top 20 At State Academic Decathlon

SAN BERNARDINO - Chino Hills, Redlands and Chaffey high schools placed among the top 20 schools at the California Academic Decathlon, which was held March 11-14 in Sacramento.

Chino Hills was the overall winner in Division II and had the top score among competing San Bernardino County high schools. It placed 15th out of 65 schools in all three divisions with 42,951.4 points.

Chino Hills was followed by county champion Redlands, which was 17th with 42,561 and Chaffey, which was 20th with 41,787.8. The fourth county team that qualified for state, Arroyo Valley, finished 37th with 38,119.9 in its first trip to state.

Granada Hills Charter from Los Angeles (50,800.9 points) was the state champion and will advance to the national Academic Decathlon competition in North Carolina in April.

The four high schools representing San Bernardino County were the most qualifiers ever for the county at the state competition.

Individually, Akhil Gupta of Chino Hills was the top student placer in the Division II Scholastic Division with 8,061.3 points. Gupta placed among the top three students in five of the 10 individual categories in Division II Scholastic: social science (first), music (third), super quiz (third), economics (third) and math (third).

Five other county students won a category in their divisions. Those winners, their schools, divisions they competed in and subjects were:

Chetan Bhat, Redlands, Division I Honors, art;

Siam Fiaz, Chino Hills, Division II Scholastic, essay and interview;

Stephen Gastelum, Chino Hills, Division II Honors, math;

Omar Peralta, Arroyo Valley, Division II Scholastic, speech;

Daniel Sanchez, Arroyo Valley, Division II Varsity, speech.
