Redlands Wins County Academic Decathlon Title

SAN BERNARDINO - Redlands High School has returned to the top spot in San Bernardino County's Academic Decathlon.

After finishing behind Chaffey for the past two years, Redlands took its record 13th county title and will be honored at tonight's 28th annual banquet.

With 43,658.7 points, Redlands edged runner-up Chaffey by 1,228.8 points and will advance to the state Academic Decathlon competition in Sacramento on March 11-14. Redland' title was its seventh in the last 10 years.

The top five scoring teams and their point totals in this year's competition are: Redlands (43,658.7 points) of the Redlands Unified School District; Chaffey (42,429.9) of Chaffey Joint Union High; Arroyo Valley (40,727.9) of San Bernardino City Unified; Chino Hills (40,672.7) of Chino Valley Unified; and Rancho Cucamonga High (40,051.4) of Chaffey.

A record 52 teams representing 29 high schools competed in this year's event. Teams, as well as individual students among the 500 competitors, will be recognized with certificates, trophies and gold, silver or bronze medals at tonight's awards ceremony at the National Orange Show's Valencia Room.

The academic competition took place on two consecutive Saturdays on Jan. 29 and Feb. 5 at Arroyo Valley High School in San Bernardino. The scholastic contest pitted students from 10 schools districts and one private school against one another in 10 subject areas.

Teams were composed of nine students, three each from grade point average categories of "A" (Honors), "B" (Scholastic) and "C" (Varsity). There were written tests in the areas of math, economics, science, language/literature, music, art and social science. Students also wrote an essay, faced a panel of interviewers and gave impromptu and prepared speeches. In the Super Quiz, Redlands took first place, followed by Kaiser in second and a tie for third between Chino Hills and Montclair.
