Newly Elected Member Of County Board Of Education

SAN BERNARDINO - Newly elected County Board of Education member Bette Harrison was sworn into office yesterday, as well as re-elected board members Gil Navarro and Mark Sumpter. Harrison represents Trustee Area B, which includes districts in Alta Loma, Central, Chaffey Joint Union High, Etiwanda, Mt. Baldy Joint, Ontario-Montclair and Upland Unified and will serve a four-year term.

Navarro represents Trustee Area D, which includes Rialto Unified and San Bernardino City Unified; and Sumpter represents Trustee Area A, which includes the districts of Adelanto, Apple Valley Unified, Baker Valley Unified, Barstow Unified, Helendale, Hesperia Unified, Lucerne Valley Unified, Needles Unified, Oro Grande, Rim of the World Unified, Silver Valley Unified, Snowline Joint Unified, Trona Joint Unified, Victor Elementary and Victor Valley Union High area both will serve four-year terms.

In a unanimous vote, Sumpter continues on as board president for a one-year term, which will end in December 2011. Sumpter has served on the County Board since 2006. In addition, the board voted unanimously to re-elect Alen Ritchie as vice president. Ritchie represents Trustee Area E, which includes the districts of Bear Valley, Colton Joint, Morongo, Redlands and Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint. He was first elected to the board in 2008.

The Board establishes policy, adopts an annual budget, approves building plans and hears student expulsion or interdistrict transfer appeals. The Board meets monthly, regularly the first Monday of the month.
