2010-09-28

SAN BERNARDINO - About 600 middle school students from 10 San Bernardino County school districts will take part in a National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) mathematics and science day at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana on Oct. 8.

Students will get to meet with a NASCAR driver and crew chief, as well as meet author Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, who wrote "Physics of NASCAR."

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities for students will include math and science labs on mass/velocity, friction/speed, friction/distance and force/height. In addition, the students will watch a movie about NASCAR.

"This is a tremendous opportunity to show students the relevance of their academics with real-world applications," County Superintendent Gary Thomas said. "I am sure this activity will rev up their interests in math and science."

The event is led by the Auto Club Speedway, County Schools' Alliance for Education and County Schools' Standards-Based Curriculum and Instruction Department. This inaugural event was organized in collaboration with the following educational partners: Baldy View Regional Occupational Program (ROP), Barstow Community College; California State University, San Bernardino; Chaffey College; Ontario-Montclair School District; San Bernardino Community College District; County Schools' ROP; The ALPHA Center; and University of California, Riverside.
