County Schools Program Delivers Donated Backpacks To Students

2010-08-26

SAN BERNARDINO - Children Deserve Success, a San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools program for homeless education, delivered 53 backpacks to students that were donated by Shoes That Fit, a local non-profit organization.

The backpacks were delivered on Aug. 17 and went to students living in two shelters in San Bernardino: Veronica's House and the Salvation Army. The students, who are in grades from kindergarten through high school, attend schools in the San Bernardino City Unified School District. Students receiving the backpacks, which were filled with new shoes and school supplies, participate in tutoring programs provided by County Schools at the shelters.

For the past four years, Shoes That Fit has partnered with Children Deserve Success to provide ongoing support with new shoes for children attending school.

"Their grassroots program helps children attend school in comfort and with dignity, so they can better focus on their studies rather than worrying about their circumstances," said Brenda Dowdy, program coordinator for County Schools' Children Deserve Success.
