County Office of Education Awarded $100,000 Safety Grant

2005-02-14

SAN BERNARDINO – The California Department of Education award the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools office a $100,000 grant for its Gang Risk Intervention Program (GRIP).

San Bernardino County’s office of education was one of 17 around the state to receive funding that totaled $3 million from the California Department of Education’s Safe and Healthy Kids office.

“Safety is a critical issue for our schools and communities. This grant for gang intervention provides us with more means to help our students feel safe on their campuses,” County Superintendent Herbert Fischer said.

The county office of education will use the grant to fund a community-based organization, the Bilingual Family Counseling Services of Ontario.

“This community-based organization has been successfully implementing its program for six years,” said Linda Miranda, special assistant for county schools.

The Gang Risk Intervention Program grant will run through January 2006. Through appropriations by the state legislature, the GRIP program has been providing funding statewide since the 1995-96 academic year. The program offers interventions for students from elementary through high school through commitments from local community, law enforcement and business resources.
