San Bernardino County Students Advance To State Science Fair

SAN BERNARDINO - San Bernardino County students won two of the top three individual honors at the 28th annual Inland Science and Engineering Fair on April 13-14 for the four-county region.

They were among a total of 27 students from the county whose projects advanced to the California State Science Fair, which will be held in Los Angeles on May 17-18.

The individual Sweepstakes Award winners from the county were:

Elementary Division: Angelina Clinkenbeard, fourth-grader at the Academy for Academic Excellence, a charter school in the Apple Valley Unified School District; Project: "Bacteria for Your Eating Pleasure;"

Junior Division: Michael Janner, eighth-grader at Moore Middle School in the Redlands Unified School District; Project: "The Effect of Ocean Acidification on the Acoustic Properties of Water."

Senior Division: Jessica Richeri of Centennial High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District; Project: "Autonomous Robotic Vehicle: Saving Lives, Preventing Accidents at a Time."

More than 730 projects from students in Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino counties participated in the event at the National Orange Show in three divisions: Elementary (fourth- and fifth-graders), Junior (sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders) and Senior (ninth- through 12th-graders).

Individual and group projects were judged in 20 categories of science - from microbiology to zoology, math and physics to electronics, and consumer sciences to earth sciences.

The regional fair is sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Riverside County Office of Education, Inyo County Office of Education and Mono County Superintendent of Schools.
