AVID Write-Off Ceremony Regional Winners Recognized

SAN BERNARDINO - Seven regional award winners from Riverside and San Bernardino counties will be honored at the 11th annual RIMS Advancement Via Individual Determination Write-Off Ceremony on March 18 at the University of Redlands Chapel.

Students in grades 6-12 from AVID programs in San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo, and Mono counties participated in this year's Write-Off, a timed-essay writing contest that is modeled after the University of California's Analytical Writing Exam. Each of the 130 middle and high school sites submitted one entry per grade level (622 total entries).

The following students will be recognized as regional winners:

• 12th-grader: Gabriela Castro of Moreno Valley High School;
• 11th-grader: A.J. Smith of Murrieta Valley High School;
• 10th-grade: Hector Delgado of Ramona High School in Riverside;
• Ninth-grader: Hannah-Marie Valenzuela of Ramona High School;
• Eighth-grader: Ryan Abram of Almeria Middle School in Fontana;
• Seventh-grader: Jenna Boyse of Mesa View Middle School in Calimesa;
• Sixth-grader: Devilyne Angulo of Kucera Middle School in Rialto.

The featured speaker at the Write-Off ceremony will be Frank Beddor, author of "The Looking Glass Wars" trilogy.
