Chaffey Wins Back-To-Back County Academic Decathlon Titles

SAN BERNARDINO - It took 26 years for Chaffey High School to win one San Bernardino County Academic Decathlon title, but it only took one more year for the school to grab its second.

At tonight's 27th annual Academic Decathlon banquet, Chaffey will be honored for its back-to-back championship, becoming only the fourth high school in county history to accomplish the feat.

After posting a count-record point total last year, Chaffey didn't break any records with this year's point total, but it still advances to the state Academic Decathlon competition in Sacramento on March 12-15.

The top five scoring teams and their point totals in this year's competition were: Chaffey High (43,839 points) of Chaffey Joint Union High School District; Redlands High (41,977) of Redlands Unified; Chino Hills of Chino Valley Unified (41,575); Rancho Cucamonga High (39,414) of Chaffey; and Arroyo Valley (37,385) of San Bernardino City Unified.

A record 48 teams representing 29 high schools competed in this year's event. Teams, as well as individual students among the 450 competitors, will be recognized with certificates, trophies and gold, silver or bronze medals at tonight's awards ceremony at the National Orange Show's Valencia Room.

The academic competition took place on two consecutive Saturdays on Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 at Arroyo Valley High School in San Bernardino. The scholastic contest pitted students from 10 schools districts and one private school against one another in 10 subject areas.

Teams were composed of nine students, three each from grade point average categories of "A" (Honors), "B" (Scholastic) and "C" (Varsity). There were written tests in the areas of math, economics, science, language/literature, music, art and social science. Students also wrote an essay, faced a panel of interviewers and gave impromptu and prepared speeches. In the Super Quiz, Chaffey took first place, followed by Redlands and Chino Hills, which tied for second.
