Fourteen County Schools Win State Title I Academic Recognition

SAN BERNARDINO - Fourteen San Bernardino County schools were named 2009-10 Title I Academic Achievement Award recipients today, according to Jack O'Connell, state superintendent of Public Instruction.

Richardson Prep in the San Bernardino City Unified School District is being recognized for the sixth consecutive year. Sixth Street Prep in the Victor Elementary School District has achieved the state recognition for five consecutive years.

The 14 county schools and their districts receiving Title I Academic Achievement this year are:

• George Visual and Performing Arts Magnet, Adelanto Elementary;
• Sycamore Rocks Elementary, Apple Valley Unified;
• Cameron Elementary and Henderson Elementary, Barstow Unified;
• Alicia Cortez Elementary, Chino Valley Unified;
• Dorothy Grant Elementary, Fontana Unified;
• Condor Elementary, Morongo Unified;
• Elderberry Elementary and Howard Elementary, Ontario-Montclair;
• Palm Avenue Elementary and Richardson Prep High Middle, San Bernardino City Unified;
• Baldy View Elementary, Upland Unified;
• Sixth Street Prep, Victor Elementary School District;
• University Prep, Victor Valley Union High.

"These are tremendous accomplishments for the schools and the communities they serve," County Superintendent Gary Thomas said. "I applaud the terrific academic work of the students, staff, teachers, administrators and district leadership that brought about this statewide recognition."

Statewide, there were 238 schools who received the recognition out of nearly 6,000 Title I schools in California. Title I is one of the programs under the federal No Child Left Behind Act designed to improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged students.
