Eight County Schools Try To Break World Record For Jumping Rope

2010-01-27

SAN BERNARDINO - Eight schools in San Bernardino County will take part in a statewide fitness attempt to break the world record for the most people jumping or skipping rope at the same time on Feb. 1.

The event is a coordinated effort by the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance to have more than 80,000 participants break the "Guinness Book of World's Records" feat. The group is organizing the event to draw attention to February as "National Heart Month" and to the issue of childhood obesity in California.

The eight county schools will be among more than 200 organizations statewide to take part in the event. The following schools and their districts from the county have signed up to participant in the effort:

Hook Junior High and University Prep, Victor Valley Union High School District;

Mesa View Middle and Yucaipa Elementary, Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District;

Moreno School, Ontario-Montclair School District;

Muscoy Elementary, San Bernardino City Unified School District;

Summit Intermediate, Etiwanda School District;

Valley Vista School, Central School District.

Beth Higbee, assistant superintendent for Education Support Services for the County Schools office, will kick off the event at Mesa View in Yucaipa.

The world record, according to Guinness, is 59,000 people set in Australia.
