Redlands East Valley High School Wins County Mock Trial Title

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Redlands East Valley High School won its second San Bernardino County Mock Trial championship in the past three years and its fourth overall on Dec. 12 by defeating district rival Redlands High School.

In winning the 28th annual county title, Redlands East Valley avenged a loss to Redlands, which won the title last year and was looking for its 11th title overall. The two teams will be recognized at the Mock Trial Awards Ceremony on Jan. 14 at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino.

Redlands East Valley, which is coached by Ed Berman, advances to the 31th annual state Mock Trial championships, which will be held March 19-21 in San Jose. This will be the school's fourth appearance at the state finals.

"I am very proud of our students," Berman said. "They have really worked hard for this, putting in more than 150 hours of practice already, and now we're going to state."

For Redlands East Valley, team members are Steven Andrews, Andrew Cavarno, Luis Chavez, Cecilia Gonzalez, Ryan Griggs, Jonathan Grisham, Taylor Guerrero, Daniela Indries, Sanjida Khasru, Kevin Law, Chad Lopez, Justin Marschke, Ryan Olson, Luke Paramo, Kent Paris, Sean Rhodes, Christine Smith, Isaac Tapia and Aramie Walker. Attorney coaches are Gary Fagan, Craig Kamansky, Karen Parker-Parent and Greg Waitman. Teacher assistant coaches are Laura Boyer and Sandra Russell-Nichley.

For Redlands, the team is coached by Donna St. George. Team members are Nicholas Coutrakon, Edward Gao, Michael Lai, Jordan Mason, Cameron McClure, LeeAnne McKenzie, Kathryn McNeal, Parth Raval, Leah Sukenik and Tiffany Wang. Attorney coaches are Jeffrey Boyd and Zaheva Stevens-Knowles.

More than 600 students representing 30 high schools participated in the Mock Trial competition this year. This event is co-sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office.
