Redlands East Valley, Redlands To Meet Again In Mock Trials Finals

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - For the third consecutive year, Redlands East Valley High School will battle crosstown-rival Redlands for the San Bernardino County championship in the 28th annual Mock Trials finals on Dec. 12.

Redlands, the defending county champions and 10-time winners of the annual competition, will take on Redlands East Valley, which will be seeking its fourth county championship. The finals will take place at the Foothill Law and Justice Center at 8303 Haven Ave. in Rancho Cucamonga from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Redlands is appearing in the school's 14th consecutive county final and has won three of the past four county championships. Redlands East Valley will be making its sixth county final.

For the finals, there will be sessions in the morning and the afternoon with both schools playing the roles of defense and prosecution. Justice Art McKinster will be presiding over the final with Dennis Christy, assistant district attorney, and Lauri Ferguson, assistant public defender, scheduled to serve as attorney scorers.

In the semifinals on Dec. 5, Redlands East Valley defeated Arrowhead Christian Academy, and Redlands edged Apple Valley. Approximately 600 students representing 30 high schools have participated in the Mock Trial competition this year. This event is co-sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office. The Mock Trial competition is a simulation of a criminal court case where high school students portray the principal courtroom characters on both sides of a case before a judge.

The public is invited to attend the competition, but there is limited seating. The winner of the county competition will advance to the state finals on March 19-21 in San Jose.
