Five Additional County Schools Exit Program Improvement

2009-12-04

SAN BERNARDINO - Five additional schools from San Bernardino County exited from Program Improvement (PI), according to revisions to the Accountability Progress Report released today by the California Department of Education.

The five schools, which met all their targets under the federal Adequate Yearly Progress for two consecutive years, brought the total of county schools that exited PI this year to 10.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for these schools," County Superintendent Gary Thomas said. "It's especially heartening to see so many of these schools make it out after having been in the PI process for a while. It's a testament to the hard work the teachers, principals and district administrators have done to help their students achieve academically."

Statewide, only 77 schools exited PI status this year. Los Angeles County, which had 13 schools exit PI, was the only county in the state with a higher number of schools than San Bernardino County in terms of those exiting Program Improvement.

The five newly announced county schools that exited Program Improvement were:

Adelanto Elementary, Adelanto Elementary School District, PI Year 4;

Anna A. Borba Fundamental Elementary in the Chino Valley Unified School District, PI Year 1;

Burbank Elementary (Year 5) and Oehl Elementary (Year 4), San Bernardino City Unified School District;

Del Rey Elementary, Victor Elementary School District, PI Year 3.

They joined the five schools that previously had been announced for exiting PI in September. Those schools and their districts were:

Franklin Elementary, Redlands Unified, from Year 1 PI;

Montara Elementary (Year 2), Hinkley Elementary (Year 4) and Crestline Elementary (Year 5), Barstow Unified;

Roosevelt Elementary (Year 4), San Bernardino City Unified.

Burbank and Crestline are the first two schools from the county to exit Year 5 of PI and only two of 10 schools statewide to accomplish the feat.

Adelanto, Hinkley, Oehl and Roosevelt were among only 11 schools statewide to exit Year 4.

This was the third consecutive year that 10 or more county schools exited from PI status. Last year, 10 county schools also exited PI. In 2007, a record 15 county schools exited PI.
