County Schools' Dowdy Wins National Recognition For Homeless Education

2009-11-06

SAN BERNARDINO - Brenda Dowdy of the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools will be honored by the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth at its conference in Denver this month.

Dowdy, Homeless Education specialist for County Schools, is receiving a national honorable mention award in the category of outstanding individual work at the group's conference from Nov. 14-17.

"I always feel like an award like this is not for me. It's for the kids," Dowdy said. "I hope this type of recognition helps in our efforts to provide more support for our homeless student population and their families."

Through her work with the 33 school districts in the county, nearly 19,000 homeless students have been identified countywide. County Schools partners with community groups, faith-based organizations and other educational agencies to provide support and resources to homeless students and their families.
