County Board To Honor County Schools' Teachers Of Year

SAN BERNARDINO - The San Bernardino County Board of Education will honor County Schools' Teachers of the Year, as well as countywide California Distinguished Schools and National Board Certified Teachers at its meeting on June 8.

The recognitions will take place at 3:30 p.m. at the County Schools' Roy C Hill Education Center, 601 N. E St. in San Bernardino.

The County Schools' Teachers of the Year who will be honored include:

Betty Brooks of the Regional Occupational Program. Brooks, a licensed vocational nurse, has been with the County Schools' ROP since 2001 as an instructor at Fontana High School.

Nicolle Burgos of State Preschool Services. As a preschool teacher with County Schools since 1998, Burgos works at Adelanto State Preschool.

Norm Cosme in Alternative Education. Cosme has taught in the juvenile court schools program for County Schools since 1999.

Janet Lopez, special education teacher in the West End Region. For the past 12 years, she has taught special education students for County Schools. She teaches at the Maple Street Early Education Center in Ontario.

Marla Stanfield, special education teacher in the Desert/Mountain Region. Starting out as a substitute educational assistant, Stanfield has been a special education teacher since 2002 and works at Puesta del Sol Elementary in Victorville.

Michael Winslow, special education teacher in the East Valley Region. He teaches at Barbara Phelps County High School in Redlands and has been with County Schools since 2006.

The County Board also will recognize this year's California Distinguished Schools, which were announced by the Department of Education in April. This year's Distinguished Schools in the county are:

Canyon Hills Junior High in Chino Valley Unified School District;

Canyon Middle School in Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District;

Grace Yokley Middle School in Mountain View School District;

Richardson Prep Hi Middle in San Bernardino City Unified School District;

Sitting Bull Middle School in Apple Valley Unified School District;

University Prep in Victor Valley Union High School District.

In addition, this year's four National Board Certified Teachers, who all teach in the Ontario-Montclair School District, will be recognized. They are:

Gertrude Cowan, Ramona School, generalist/early childhood;

Sandra Knowles, El Camino School, generalist/middle childhood;

Leah Leonard, Richard E. Haynes School, generalist/early childhood;

Deborah Roose-Baker, De Anza Middle School, exceptional needs specialist/early childhood through young adulthood.
