County Superintendent Selected to State P-16 Council

2005-04-11

SAN BERNARDINO – County Superintendent Herbert Fischer was named as one of 44 appointees by Jack O’Connell, state superintendent of public instruction, to serve on his newly established Superintendent’s California P-16 Council.

San Bernardino County established its own P-16 Council in 2002. The county program , which now has three regional councils in place, promotes college readiness for all students and particularly those who have been under-represented traditionally at college. It develops strategies to better coordinate, integrate and improve education for California students from preschool through college.

“San Bernardino County has recognized the need to provide a seamless transition for students as they progress from preschool through college,” Fischer said. “I am proud to represent the county in helping the state develop strategies to promote achievement for all students in California.”

On the state P-16 Council, O’Connell named Dr. Barry Munitz, president and chief executive officer of The J. Paul Getty Trust and former chancellor of the California State University, to chair the group.

The members of the P-16 Council represent a wide range of experts throughout California, including teachers, administrators, parents, business leaders, students, and academics.

On the county’s P-16 Council, education institutions participating represent the following school districts: Adelanto, Apple Valley, Baker Valley, Barstow, Bear Valley, Colton, Fontana, Helendale, Hesperia, Lucerne Valley, Needles, Oro Grande, Redlands, Rialto, San Bernardino City, Silver Valley, Snowline, Trona, Victor Elementary, Victor Valley and Yucaipa-Calimesa.

In addition, participating community college districts include Barstow, Chaffey, Copper Mountain, Riverside, San Bernardino Community and Victor Valley. Also, California State University, San Bernardino, the University of Redlands and the University of California, Riverside are represented on the P-16 Council.
