West End Special Needs Students Receive Art and Writing Honors

2009-05-06

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Some 127 West End special education students received awards at the 11th annual Community Advisory Committee Art and Writing Contest Awards at Ruth Musser Middle School on May 5.

The event was sponsored by the West End Special Education Local Plan Area (WESELPA) and its Community Advisory Committee.

The winners of first-, second- and third-place awards were selected from a pool of 257 entries from students in 58 schools in 10 districts and students served by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS). Students were judged in visual arts, essays, poetry, photography, musical score and class performance.

"This event is a showcase for students to display their creative talents," County Superintendent Gary Thomas said. "The art and writing awards also provide an opportunity to thank the wonderful teachers, staff and families who support the work of these students."

In addition, 23 individuals received teacher appreciation awards at the event, which was attended by approximately 500 parents, students, family and community members.

The West End SELPA is a consortium of participating school districts that provides quality special education programs and services to meet the individual needs of special education students in the region. The West End SELPA consists of the following school districts: Alta Loma, Central, Chaffey Joint Union High, Chino Valley Unified, Cucamonga, Etiwanda, Mountain View, Mt. Baldy Joint, Ontario-Montclair and Upland Unified school districts, as well as San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools.
