Young Artists' Gallery Exhibit At Cal State San Bernardino On April 9-19

2009-04-02

SAN BERNARDINO - Fifty San Bernardino County students will exhibit their work at the 11th annual Young Artists' Gallery, which will run from April 9-19 at California State University, San Bernardino.

The Young Artists' Gallery is a countywide student exhibit featuring works that have been selected through judging. The exhibition is the only countywide visual arts show designed to highlight students who are enrolled in a visual arts production course.

"Studies show us that arts education provides a strong foundation for students' academic achievements," County Superintendent Gary Thomas said. "Schools that are able to provide enriching arts curriculum see the payoff in engaged students who flourish across their subject areas. I would encourage all schools and districts to provide opportunities for all students to study the arts, so that they can follow a path toward a well-rounded education."

The exhibit is at the Robert V. Fullerton Museum on the Cal State San Bernardino campus. The hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

The Young Artists' Gallery is a program of the Arts Education Network, a collaboration of the Riverside, Inyo, Mono, and San Bernardino (RIMS) California Arts Project, Cal State San Bernardino and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools.

The show was the inspiration of two art educators and RIMS California Arts Project teacher leaders: Dave Westcott, formerly of Mary P. Henck Intermediate School in the Rim of the World Unified School District and Julie Tabler of Arroyo Valley High School of San Bernardino City Unified.

As veterans of many county art shows, they wanted to establish a countywide student exhibit that showcased the quality of student art produced in the area. The Young Artists' Gallery serves as a venue for the secondary and middle school student with a high degree of interest and ability in the visual arts.
