2009-03-13

SAN BERNARDINO - Four San Bernardino County junior high students qualified and will compete in the California Geography Bee in Sacramento next month.

The four county qualifiers are:

Dorian Kershaw, an eighth-grader at Imogene Garner Hook Junior High School in the Victor Valley Union High School District;

George Liu, an eighth-grader at Vineyard Junior High in the Alta Loma School District;

Lucas Shurson, an eighth-grader at Canyon Middle School in the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District;

Theodore Teichman, a seventh-grader at Cope Middle School in the Redlands Unified School District.

They are among 100 fourth- to eighth-grade students statewide to qualify for the event, which will be held beginning April 3 at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento. They qualified by winning their schoolwide competitions and then being one of the top 100 students statewide to place after taking a written test.

The top finisher at the California Geography Bee will qualify for the U.S. finals, which will be held in Washington, D.C., on May 19-20.
