2008-12-08

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - For the second consecutive year, Redlands East Valley High School will battle crosstown-rival Redlands for the San Bernardino County championship in the 27th annual Mock Trials finals on Dec. 13.

Redlands East Valley, the defending county champion, will square off against the most successful county program in the history of the Mock Trial competitions. The finals will take place at the Foothill Law and Justice Center at 8303 Haven Ave. in Rancho Cucamonga from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Redlands has won a record nine Mock Trials titles, and this will be the school's 13th consecutive county final.

Redlands East Valley will be making its fifth county final and is looking for its fourth title.

For the finals, there will be sessions in the morning and the afternoon with both schools playing the roles of defense and prosecution. Justice Art McKinster will be presiding over the final with Michael Ramos, district attorney of San Bernardino County, and Doreen Boxer of the Public Defender's office are scheduled to serve as attorney scorers.

In the semifinals on Dec. 6, Redlands East Valley defeated Silverado, and Redlands edged Arrowhead Christian Academy. Approximately 600 students representing 29 high schools have participated in the Mock Trial competition this year. This event is co-sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office. The Mock Trial competition is a simulation of a criminal court case where high school students portray the principal courtroom characters on both sides of a case before a real judge.

The public is invited to attend the competition, but there is limited seating. The winner of the county competition will advance to the state finals on March 20-22 in Riverside.
