AVID Write-Off Award Ceremony on April 21

2005-04-19

SAN BERNARDINO – The sixth annual Advancement Via Individual Determination Write-Off awards ceremony will be held April 21 from 7-9 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel at the University of Redlands.

Francisca Sanchez, assistant superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, will be the featured guest speaker. Sanchez won the Inland Empire Educator of the Year Award in 2002 and is a recipient of the Presidential Excellence Medallion from California State University, San Bernardino.

The AVID awards ceremony recognizes 12 regional winners in grades seven through 12, one per grade level from San Bernardino County and one per grade level from Riverside County. With site level winners and honorable mentions also recognized, a total of 735 students will receive awards.

The Write-Off is based on the University of California analytical writing exam administered to incoming freshmen in the spring of each year. The two-part Write-Off consisted of a non-fiction reading piece followed by a 45-minute writing from a prompt similar to those used on the UC test. Each school selected two winners per grade level and two honorable mentions.

The winners were determined by AVID coordinators from both counties. The four-county AVID region covers Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino counties. It serves 163 schools and more than 19,000 students. More than 100 schools participated in this year's Write-Off.

For more information about the event, contact Eileen Potterton at the San Bernardino Superintendent of Schools office at (909) 386-2632.
