Twenty-nine County Students Advance to State Science Fair

2005-04-20

SAN BERNARDINO – Twenty-nine students from San Bernardino County schools will advance to the 54rd annual California State Science Fair on May 23-24 in Los Angeles after receiving top honors at the 2005 Inland Area Science and Engineering Fair at the National Orange Show.

At the state science fair, about 900 students in grades 6-12 from 350 schools across the state will compete for awards totaling more than $50,000.

During the four-county regional fair held April 19-20 in San Bernardino, students received gold, silver and bronze medals, with the top two winners in each category selected to participate at the state level. Awards were presented to students during an evening ceremony at the National Orange Show’s Renaissance Room on April 20.

More than 75,000 fourth- through 12th-grade students from Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino (RIMS) counties competed for the 700 slots available to students at the regional fair. Only winners in the junior and senior divisions advance to the state competition.

Individual and group projects were judged in 19 categories of science—from microbiology to zoology, math and physics to electronics, and consumer sciences to earth sciences.

The regional fair is sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Riverside County Office of Education, Inyo County Office of Education and Mono County Superintendent of Schools.
