Reading Buddies Event Kicks Off At Burbank Elementary

2008-10-10

SAN BERNARDINO - The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, in partnership with the Kiwanis of Greater San Bernardino and the San Bernardino Unified School District, will kick off Reading Buddies at Burbank Elementary on Oct. 13 at 2:30 p.m. The volunteer reading program calls on business, civic, community and education leaders to commit to reading to students once a month in a classroom environment.

San Bernardino County Superintendent Gary Thomas, Burbank Principal Dorothy Fenster and other officials will lead the event. The public-private partnership supported by local chambers, service organizations and other businesses has been created and expanded countywide to include East Valley, West End and High Desert school districts, including Central, Colton, Chino Valley, Etiwanda, Ontario-Montclair, Rialto, San Bernardino City and Victor Elementary.

"The Reading Buddies program is valuable in that it brings volunteers together to promote literacy and emphasize the importance of reading," Principal Fenster said. The Burbank Elementary program will kick off with a meet-and-greet and classroom reading. Future Reading Buddies dates for the school are: Dec. 15, Jan. 12, April 13 and June 8, which culminates with a finale celebration. All reading events begin at 2:30 p.m.

The school is located at 198 West Mill St. in San Bernardino. Business or community members who would like to join the voluntary reading program should contact Principal Fenster at Burbank at (909) 388-6324 or Linda Miranda with County Schools at (909) 476-2214.
