Rogers Elementary In Colton Honors Student Writers

2008-09-26

COLTON - Thirty students from Paul J. Rogers Elementary School in the Colton Joint Unified School District were honored for their outstanding writing during a ceremony on Sept. 26 in the school's cafeteria.

"We are very proud of our brilliant students here at Rogers," said Principal Lisa Mannes of Rogers. "Our hope is that they continue writing and become excited about further developing their writing."

Of the 30 students who were honored at the event, Vanessa Bravo said that she liked that her outstanding work was recognized.

"I like school, because it takes a long time and I learn a lot," Bravo said.

After the speaker, Dan Evans of the County Schools' Communications' office, talked about effective writing, the students were allowed to present some of their work.

Alexia Lopez, a fourth-grader, wrote about a letter to the library.

"It's a friendly letter that talks about why the library is so good," she said.

Each of the students received a certificate of recognition, plus tools that will help with their writing like their own writing journal, a bookmark and a box of goodies, such as a pencil, pen and eraser.

The recognition of the student writers is a monthly event at Rogers, and the honored students' writing is on display in the cafeteria. Plus, their writings are printed in a book that will be displayed in the school's library.
