AVID Recognizes Regional Write-Off Winners

2005-04-22

SAN BERNARDINO – Twelve students in grades seven through 12 from San Bernardino and Riverside counties were recognized on April 21 at the sixth annual Advancement Via Individual Determination Write-Off awards ceremony at the University of Redlands. The regional winners were among about 735 students from the Inland Empire who received recognition at the event.

The Write-Off is based on the University of California analytical writing exam administered to incoming freshmen in the spring of each year. The two-part Write-Off consisted of a non-fiction reading piece followed by a 45-minute writing from a prompt similar to those used on the UC test. Each school selected two winners per grade level and two honorable mentions.

The winners were determined by AVID coordinators from both counties. The four-county AVID region covers Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino counties. It serves 163 schools and more than 19,000 students. More than 100 schools participated in this year's Write-Off.

The 12 regional winners were:

Grade 7: Angelica M. Mahabir, Arrowview Middle (San Bernardino County); Aryanne B. Perez, La Quinta Middle (Riverside County).

Grade 8: Erica C. Hernandez, Kucera Middle (SB); Lynn N. Pham, Sierra Middle (R).

Grade 9: Robert Rybak, Redlands East Valley High (SB); Maira T. Mercado, Arlington High (R).

Grade 10: Amy L. Fones, Carter High (SB); Isabel A. Mendez , Centennial High (R).

Grade 11: Lorraine Bueno, Rialto High (SB); Dwight B. Pope, Valley View High (R).

Grade 12: Arturo Gomez, Rialto High (SB); Dawn M. Wood, Elsinore High (R).
