"Something About Me" Contest Winners Recognized

2005-05-03

RANCHO CUCAMONGA – The seventh annual “Something About Me” Art and Writing Contest will honor 115 West End special education students at a ceremony today at the West End Educational Service Center.

The winners were selected from a pool of 273 entries from students in 69 schools in seven districts and students served by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS). Students were judged in visual arts, essays, poetry, photography, musical score and class performance. In addition, 17 teachers will be honored with Parent Appreciation Awards at the ceremony.

The contest is sponsored by the West End Special Education Local Plan Area (WESELPA) and the WESELPA Community Advisory Committee.

“This type of program gives the students good feelings about their abilities,” West End SELPA administrator Jacqueline Haugen said. “It gives them recognition, allows parents the opportunity to support students’ efforts and gives the students an opportunity to perform in public and have their projects on public display.”

The West End SELPA is a consortium of participating school districts that provides quality special education programs and services to meet the individual needs of special education students in the region. The West End SELPA consists of Alta Loma, Central, Chaffey Joint Union High, Chino Valley Unified, Cucamonga, Etiwanda, Mountain View, Mt. Baldy Joint, Ontario-Montclair and Upland Unified school districts, as well as SBCSS.

A complete list of the student winners is available in an Excel spreadsheet. Contact Dan Evans, communications project specialist, at (909) 386-2413 for more information.
