County Board of Education Names New Schools

2005-05-04

SAN BERNARDINO – The San Bernardino County Board of Education selected names for new schools in Etiwanda, Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands and Rialto at its May 2 meeting.

The new school names and locations are:

Frost County Early Education Center, 12860 Banyan St. in Etiwanda;

Mulberry County Early Education Center, 8435 Archibald Ave. in Rancho Cucamonga;

Barbara Phelps County High School, 1712 W. Park Ave. in Redlands;

Bob Murphy County Community Day School, 149 N. Arrowhead Ave. in Rialto.

“The public made several outstanding recommendations for the naming of the schools. Three of the schools were named after families or individuals who have made lasting contributions to public education in San Bernardino County,” said Dr. John P. Miller, president of the County Board of Education.

Here are brief descriptions of the schools, the nominations and the services the sites will provide:

Frost County Early Education Center

The Frost family traces back to 1882 in the community of Etiwanda. The family general store was in the community for 62 years, and the office of postmaster was held by family members for 72 years. Three members of the family – George, John and Morris Frost – have all served on the Etiwanda School Board. Another family member, Jim Frost, was Rancho Cucamonga’s first mayor, and he has served as the city’s treasurer for the past 28 years.

“To be quite honest, having the family recognized has made me just speechless,” Jim Frost said. “To be one of the pioneering families in the area and be recognized with the kind of educational facility the county has is a great honor.”

The Frost County Early Education Center will provide education services to children of preschool age with special needs.

Mulberry County Early Education Center

Five of the 10 nominations for the site in Rancho Cucamonga wanted the Mulberry County Early Education Center to remain the same name as it has been for the past seven years.

The Board of Education agreed with the assessment to keep the Mulberry name.

“Students, parents and community members already know the site as being the Mulberry Early Education Center,” said Dr. David Stine, vice president of the Board of Education and trustee for the area where the school is located.

The Mulberry County Early Education Center will provide education services to children of preschool age with special needs.

Barbara Phelps County High School

Phelps has more than 48 years of service to the Redlands Unified School District as a teacher, administrator, board member and advocate for early childhood education.

“I personally know of no other individual who has made a greater contribution to the education of children in the communities served by the Redlands Unified School District than Barbara Phelps,” wrote Superintendent Robert Hodges of RUSD in his nomination.

“I really feel honored,” said Phelps, who spent 30 years working in the district and she’s serving her 19th year on the Board of Education in Redlands. “I’m just overcome by the whole experience.”

The Barbara Phelps County High School will provide educational services to junior and senior high school students with special needs.

Bob Murphy County Community Day School

Bob Murphy, a retired San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools’ assistant superintendent in Business Services, had a long-standing, well-respected career as a chief business official in the county and across the state.

During his service with County Schools, Murphy led the development of a five-year facilities plan to enhance and establish equitable and permanent school facilities.

“It’s a tremendous honor to have my name connected with this facility and the students who will be served,” Murphy said.

Bob Murphy County Community Day School will provide educational services to at-risk junior and senior high school students.
