Redlands vs. Redlands East Valley in Mock Trials Finals on Dec. 11

RANCHO CUCAMONGA ? Redlands High School will compete in its ninth consecutive San Bernardino County Mock Trials final when it goes up against city rival Redlands East Valley on Dec. 11. The finals for the 23rd annual competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Foothill Law and Justice Center at 8303 Haven Ave. in Rancho Cucamonga. Redlands will be trying to win its eighth Mock Trials championship, surpassing Apple Valley High School for the most victories in the county competition. Redlands East Valley, which defeated Redlands for the 2000-01 title, is seeking its second championship and is competing in its third final in the past five years. For the finals, there will be two sessions in the morning and the afternoon. In the morning session, Redlands will act in the role of the prosecution and Redlands East Valley will be in the role of defense. In the afternoon, the two sides will change roles. Justice Art McKinster will be presiding over the final with County District Attorney Michael Ramos and Public Defender John Roth serving as attorney scorers. In the semifinals, Redlands East Valley defeated defending champion Upland, while Redlands defeated perennial power Apple Valley. More than 400 high school students representing 29 high schools have participated in the Mock Trial competition this year. It is co-sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and the San Bernardino County District Attorney?s office. The Mock Trial competition is a simulation of a criminal court case where high school students portray the principal courtroom characters on both sides of a case before a real judge. The public is invited to attend the competition, but there is limited seating. The winner of the county competition will advance to the state finals on March 18-20 in Riverside.
