Committee Votes to Deny Transfer of Territory to Yucaipa-Calimesa

2007-03-13

SAN BERNARDINO - The San Bernardino Committee on School District Organization denied a petition on March 12 for a transfer of territory from Beaumont Unified School District to the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District.

By an 8-2 roll-call vote, the committee denied the petition of the proposed transfer of 4,736 acres of land in Calimesa that resides in the Beaumont School District boundaries. The proposed land is primarily rural today, but is expected to have new residential, commercial, retail and industrial development over the next several years.

The vote came after the committee disapproved two of the nine individual findings concerning the transfer. By an 8-2 vote, the committee found that the proposal would not result in an equitable division of property and facilities of the original district (Beaumont). The committee also voted 10-0 that the proposed reorganization would not continue to promote sound fiscal management and would cause a substantial negative effect on the fiscal status of the proposed district or any existing district affected by the proposed reorganization.

The chief petitioners can appeal the County Committee's decision to the State Board of Education. Since the issue involves districts in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, the Riverside County Committee on School District Organization also will consider the petition at a meeting on March 15 at 6 p.m. at the Riverside County Office of Education.
