County ROP Students Win Regional Awards

SAN BERNARDINO – Five Regional Occupational Program (ROP) students from San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS) earned top honors at a recent regional recognition competition.

They were among 14 SBCSS students to receive medals and scholarships at the regional recognition competition sponsored by the California Association of Regional Occupational Centers and Programs Inland Empire Chapter and the San Bernardino Elks Lodge No. 836 on May 10.

The ROP students competed against others from programs representing Baldy View ROP, Colton-Redlands-Yucaipa ROP and Riverside County Office of Education ROP for gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention medals, as well as scholarships ranging from $20 to $150.

“We are very pleased with how well our students performed in this competition. It shows that our teachers and recruitment placement specialists are doing an excellent job preparing students for future careers,” said Mark Lyons, SBCSS ROP director.

Students were judged on their employment applications, resumes, interview, and portfolios demonstrating ROP course skills in eight occupational categories.

“The caliber of the students was just incredible,” said Lorraine Velarde, one of the judges and district director for 62nd District Assembly member Joe Baca Jr. “ROP is one of the best programs for the success of students, and it is obvious the future will be in good hands with these outstanding individuals.”
