2 County Middle Schools Receive Statewide Recognitions

2013-02-25

SAN BERNARDINO - Two high-performing middle schools in San Bernardino County - Summit Intermediate in the Etiwanda School District and Vanguard Prep in Apple Valley Unified School District - will hold ceremonies on Feb. 26 for recent statewide recognitions.

Summit Intermediate and Vanguard Prep were among 12 middle schools identified statewide as "Schools to Watch" by the California Department of Education in January.

Summit Intermediate will hold its recognition ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 26 at the school, which is located at 5959 East Ave. in Etiwanda. Vanguard Prep, which is located at 12951 Mesquite Road in Apple Valley, will hold its recognition ceremony at 1 p.m. on Feb. 26.

Those selected as "Schools to Watch" demonstrate academic excellence, as well as developmental responsiveness to the needs and interests of their students, social equity and organizational support.

Summit Intermediate has reported significant increases during the past five years of state standardized testing, with nearly every numerically significant subgroup at or above the statewide target of 800.

With a student population of more than 1,000 students Vanguard Prep has consistently closed the achievement gap and has sustained a strong focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum.
