Norton Elementary Focuses On 'Wearing Glasses Is Cool' Project

2013-02-13

SAN BERNARDINO - Fourth-grade students from Captain Leland F. Norton Elementary School in the San Bernardino City Unified School District will conduct a real-world exercise in developing eyeglass cases as part of the school's "Wearing Glasses Is Cool" project.

On Feb. 15, students, parents and teachers from Norton will visit the Technical Employment Training Center at the San Bernardino International Airport and learn how to build eyeglass cases using standards-based math.

"The objective of the field trip is to show how student learning in the classroom is relevant to real-world jobs and why wearing glasses is important," said Elizabeth Cochrane-Benoit, principal at Norton.

The project is a collaborative effort between the school, the training center and the Alliance for Education with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools. The two-hour session at Technical Employment Training, which is located at 194 Leland Norton Way in San Bernardino, will show students how to use formulas for perimeter and areas, as well as graphing, to create eyeglass cases.

The training center is a non-profit and education cooperative, partnering with County Schools' Regional Occupational Program, the County Workforce Investment Board and Kelly Space and Technology. The training center provides manufacturing trades education and hands-on skills.

Students will visit the training center from 9-11 a.m. on Feb. 15. Media are invited to attend the session.
