Real World Math Presentations Coming To Mesa View Students

YUCAIPA - More than 300 eight-graders at Mesa View Middle School in the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District are expected to take part in nine real-world presentations of math and science on Feb. 1.

The event will feature presentations from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena to a firefighting engineer in San Bernardino. The presentations are sponsored by the San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians with contributions from the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools' Alliance for Education, the University of California, Riverside's ALPHA Center, Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) program and Tomorrow's Teacher of Science and Math.

The speakers take part in the Alliance for Education's Applications by Business and Labor for Educators (ABLE) program that engages students in real-world applications of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Presenters include representatives of CalPortland Cement, CalTrans, Southern California Gas Co., SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union and SCS Field Services, as well as an architect and airplane pilot.

The presentations, which will be made during 35-minute class periods, will take place from 7:40-11 a.m.
