Safety, High Reliability Summit Set For Feb. 5

2013-01-29

SAN BERNARDINO - Building more collaborative efforts to identify, prioritize and remedy countywide safety issues is the goal of the Safety and High Reliability Summit, scheduled for Feb. 5 at noon at the National Orange Show Events Center.

The summit is looking to attract city and county elected officials, school superintendents, college presidents, as well as leaders in justice, law enforcement and public safety.

"In light of recent school shooting events that have taken place across the country, it's important for our schools to be proactive when it comes to safety issues," San Bernardino County Superintendent Gary Thomas said. "We work closely with partners in law enforcement, but this is another way we can look at improving safety in our schools on a system-wide basis."

County District Attorney Michael Ramos said school safety issues always deserve attention.

"Working to make sure that we have safe schools for our children has been and always will be a top priority for every stakeholder in San Bernardino County," Ramos said. "Through this summit, we can continue to foster new ideas and look at ways to do an even better job, because ultimately, at the end of the day, our children deserve nothing less."

County Sheriff-Coroner John McMahon echoed similar sentiments concerning school safety.

"Working together with the district attorney, county superintendent and our county partners will ensure that we continue to have the best possible ideas, tools and resources to keep our school campuses safe," McMahon said. "This summit is one way that we can come together and share ideas and build new partnerships. I will work to keep the safety of our children as a top priority as sheriff."

The featured presenter at the summit will be Christopher Hart, who is the vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.

The event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Feb. 5 in the Valencia Room at the National Orange Show.

The summit is sponsored by the offices of the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, County District Attorney and County Sheriff-Coroner.
